When we met this wonderful couple, married for over 40 years and proud parents of four grown children, they were thinking ahead. They loved their home and planned to remain there for many years, so they wanted to renovate their master bathroom with both beauty and future accessibility in mind.

Their goal was simple: create a space that felt bright, modern, and elegant while incorporating thoughtful design features that would make daily life easier and safer as they grow older.

Designing for Aging in Place

One of the greatest advantages of remodeling is the opportunity to plan ahead. Rather than waiting until accessibility becomes a necessity, this couple chose to incorporate age-friendly features now, allowing them to enjoy the benefits immediately while preparing for the future.

Several accessibility-focused improvements were incorporated into the design:

• Wider doorway openings to better accommodate mobility aids and potential wheelchair access.
• A curbless shower entry, eliminating trip hazards and creating a seamless transition into the shower.
• A built-in corner shower bench, providing a comfortable place to sit when needed.
• Dual shower heads, including a handheld shower positioned for easy use while seated on the bench.

These features not only improve accessibility but also enhance the overall comfort and functionality of the bathroom for users of all ages.

Bright, Clean, and Timeless Design

While accessibility was an important consideration, aesthetics were equally important to the homeowners.

The clients envisioned a bright and welcoming space that felt open, fresh, and timeless. To achieve this look, we paired soft Sherwin Williams Panda White walls with elegant white shower tile, creating a clean backdrop that maximizes light throughout the room.

For contrast and visual depth, we selected slate gray floor tile, adding richness and sophistication while grounding the overall design.

A sleek linear drain was incorporated into the curbless shower design, providing both a contemporary appearance and improved water management. The result is a shower that feels spacious, elegant, and easy to maintain.
